User Interface Designers play a major role in designing the way we see our digital world. From computer software to mobile apps everything we interact with in our everyday life is carefully designed by a UI Designer.

Following are some interview questions for a UI Designer:

Q.1 What do you understand by UI design? Ans. Also abbreviated as User Interface design, UI design comprises of the procedure UI designers use to create or built interfaces in digital devices or in software such as mobile phones, computers, websites etc. in simple words, user interface is what user sees while interacting with a product or service. Q.2 What are steps or stages you as a User Interface Designer use to built a design? Ans. There are various stages in User Interface designing. The four basic steps that kind of includes all the stages of UI designing are-
  • Rough sketching of concept.
  • Block level designing and generating user flow diagrams using block level designs.
  • Creating Wireframes or creating the blueprint of the software or the app.
  • Mock up- after refining the wireframes, built the prototype and test it.
Q.3 What do you keep in mind while designing a user friendly UI design? Ans. There are certain things that enhance the designing of the interface. They are briefly discussed below:
  • The textures and the colors are strategically used to provide direction to attention.
  • Keeping the interface simple is the key. A good interface avoids unnecessary elements and do not complicate what the user sees in a tab.
  • Using common UI elements enhances user efficiency. Also, maintaining consistency of the patterns, layouts, and elements improve user comfort. Thus, making the interface better.
  • Using various UI elements to communicate and inform the user what is happening reduces user frustration. Good UIs should provide satisfaction.
  • Carefully placing the elements improves readability, aids scanning and draws attention to the important pieces of information displayed.
  • The size of the font, color of the font as well as the page and all these small elements plays an important role in increasing user scalability, legibility and readability as a whole.
Q.4 Mention certain formats in user interfaces. Ans. They mainly come in three formats –
  • GUIs or Graphical User Interfaces – users have contact with visual representations on digital control panels such a computer desktop.
  • VUIs or Voice – Controlled User Interfaces – user deals with these with their voice. Alexa, Siri, Google, any such smart assistant are examples of VUIs.
  • Gesture based user interfaces – it uses 3D design spaces through bodily measures. A virtual Reality (VR) game is an example.
Q.5 What are the skills you have that make you perfect for this job?
  • Skill set including both soft skills and hard skills is important to perform any task ranging from the simplest of all to the complex. Skills that a good User Interface Designer must have are:
  • In UI design, communication is the key. Communicating with your client or stakeholders to effectively make them understand the intended function of each element a designer has designed.
  • A UI designer has to collaborate at every level. Being a team player is thus of benefit here. This involves listening, analyzing and solving problems together to get to the root of the problem.
  • The human aspect of UI design that is one of the most important skills one should have is, empathy. Putting oneself in the user’s shoes to understand the problem and serve them better requires empathy.
